Who Eats What?

The guided tour will identify food webs within the natural world, based on species within Exploris Aquarium, to give students a wider appreciation for the complex web systems in the marine world. Then in the classroom session we will allow students to gain a deeper understanding of the language and terminology relating to food chains and webs by being tasked with creating their own. Students will partake in a practical excercise where they will come up with their own food webs based upon a selection of animals they are given. We aim for students to leave with an appreciation of the complexity of the natural world, but how fragile this is. Throughout the food webs, students will learn how humans are intervening in these food chains, removing vital species from them for our own consumption. Students will have to work out the long term effects of removing one species from the food chain, the benefits and consequences.
